Plati is located south of Kyparissia, about 60 km west of Messini, 77 km west of Kalamata, north of Pylos and SSE of Pyrgos. It is located below the Mali (Aigaleo?) as well as the Kyparissia Mountains.
Apart from farmlands, the area is mountainous, covered with forests on higher altitudes.
Until 1961, the village was known as Kanaloupou (Καναλουπού). According to the Venetian census of 1690, it had a population of 127 people. Springs supplying water to Filiatra emanate from Plati, where three watermills were located.
After World War II and the Greek Civil War and until the 1970s, a great percentage of the population emigrated from the village. In the late-1990s, the ex-community (now a village and a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed municipality of Filiatra.
Its economy is mainly based on agricultural products.
